Visitation

Awoken in the middle of the night
by the gentle tapping of rain, not sure
if I am dreaming, or really seeing
your face there,
alive now as it was then,
and mine here—
a thin veil between us,
dividing my life from your death.

There is a lightness in you now,
like when we first met,
and the way you made me laugh
I’ve always loved.

Six months have passed.
I can no longer remember
the details of your face,
but your soothing voice,
still vivid,
turns me once again
into a weeping child.
