The Great Mystery /

Strolling along the riverbank
through a lush urban ravine,

as the clamour of streets and engines,
and the city’s white noise falls away,

I step into uncharted interior terrain,
seeking the great unknown.

A gentle breeze moves through the cottonwoods,
sending silky seed-tufts
dancing into the air—

filling the sky with shimmering stars,
carpeting the earth
like a fresh fall of snow.

A gleam captures my eye—

a tender shoot lifts from shadow
on dreaming ground.

I pause to listen to the wilderness,

entranced by the silent spring
of revelation,

without fanfare,
without declaration.

In that moment,
I catch a glimpse
of the great mystery—

but not
as I imagined.
