My Rock

Returning to our favourite place,
I watch the gentle waves
as they break around the rocks
in the shallows
of the barren shore.

I look back
on the turbulent days
after you left,
when I was beset
by unrelenting tides
of unsettling revelation,
as the strength you gave me
began to fade
like an ebbing wave.

A solid weathered boulder and smaller rocks sit in gentle shallow waves beneath layered clouds and shafts of sunlight, painted in black-and-white ink wash with softly fading transparent edges.
